Linux Operating System

Linux Operating System was developed in 1991 by a young student, Linux Torvalds, a student in the University of Helsinki in Finland. Started as a hobby and later grown into a large company. Linux interest in Minix, a small UNIX leads to the development of Linux Kernel which became the center for all Linux system and some organizations. Based on this, Linux Operating System was developed.

At first, Linux Operating System started out for personal use but as it progressed it caught the attention and later support of large corporations like HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems. With the help of Free Software Foundation it was made available in the internet for free. It's the best example of open source operating system which means that the codes used are freely accessible online. With big support from a large group of engineers who contributed to the open source and from the huge companies made Linux a fast moving and dynamic operating system.

All the way through 1990, Linux was considered by tech pundits as unsuitable for general use. With the efforts of KDE and GNOME, developers of desktop management system, Mozilla web browser and other companies, Linux was able to run on a wide range of applications and can be operated by anyone. A live CD version called Knoppix can be downloaded from the internet. It can provide the need of carrying out daily tasks of the computer and doesn't need installation.

In its second decade of operation, it was adopted mainly as a server platform but it's still used as office and home desktop operating system. Its operating system is integrated into microchips called embedding process. It's used increasingly in devices and appliances.

Linux Operating System advantage over the other operating system is that it offers low cost. No need to spend money since its software is registered with General Public License (GNU). It's stable because it needs no periodic rebooting to maintain level of performance. It provides consistent high performance on networks and workstations. It can manage simultaneous users and it can be used for old computers and can be very flexible. Since it's free online, it has a strong support for functionality in the network, client and server system can be simple set up on any computer running Linux. It has the ability to perform tasks such as backups for network and believed to be more reliable than any alternative system. It's one of the most secure operating system. Its flexible file access permission system and walls prevent hackers and viruses.

Use of Linux Operating System is rising in our society. There's deployment of the system in industry, government and even arts. It's definitely moving forward to future developments.
